How does SSDI interact with state disability in California?

In California, many individuals receive both State Disability Insurance (SDI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) during the course of their disability claim. These two programs serve different purposes, but their benefits can overlap—and it’s important to understand how they interact to avoid delays or overpayments.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

Key Differences Between SDI and SSDI
  • SDI is a state-run program providing short-term wage replacement for workers unable to work due to illness, injury, or pregnancy. It's typically available for up to 52 weeks.
  • SSDI is a federal program that provides long-term disability benefits to individuals with serious impairments expected to last at least one year or result in death.

How the Interaction Works

1. You Can Receive Both—But Timing Matters

Many Californians apply for SDI first, since it pays out quickly—usually within a few weeks of filing. SSDI, by contrast, has a much longer approval process, often taking several months or more.

In most cases:

  • You’ll receive SDI while waiting for your SSDI decision.
  • If SSDI is approved later, the SSA may pay retroactive benefits.
  • Overlapping periods may result in offsets or repayment coordination.

2. No Double-Dipping Beyond Your Actual Income

If both programs pay you for the same time period, SSA will reduce your SSDI back pay by the amount you already received from SDI. You’re not allowed to receive more in combined disability pay than your normal pre-disability income.

3. Reporting Is Critical

You must notify both California’s Employment Development Department (EDD) and the SSA if:

  • You’re receiving benefits from both programs
  • You return to work
  • Your condition improves

Failing to report may lead to benefit overpayments, which you’ll be required to repay.
