How to check your disability status in California?

By Hogan Smith

Updated 05/19/2025

Once you’ve submitted your application for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you may be wondering how to check the progress of your claim. If you live in California, the process is the same as in other states—managed by the Social Security Administration (SSA)—but there are some additional state programs and tools to be aware of.

This guide explains how you can track the status of your federal and state disability claims quickly and effectively.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

Check the Status of Your SSDI or SSI Claim

1. Create or Log Into Your My Social Security Account

The easiest way to check your claim status is online via your my Social Security account:

  • Visit ssa.gov/myaccount
  • Log in or create an account if you don’t already have one
  • From your dashboard, you can:
  • View current application status
  • See what documents have been received or are still needed
  • Get estimated timelines and decision updates

This service is available 24/7 and is the fastest way to check your SSDI or SSI claim status.

2. Call the Social Security Administration

If you prefer to speak with someone directly or don’t have internet access:

  • Call SSA at 1-800-772-1213
  • Representatives are available Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM
  • Be ready to provide your Social Security number, application confirmation number, and personal details for verification

Track California State Disability Insurance (SDI) Claims

In addition to federal SSDI/SSI programs, California offers State Disability Insurance (SDI) for short-term disabilities. If you've applied for SDI:

1. Use the EDD's Online Portal

  • Visit the EDD’s SDI Online website: edd.ca.gov
  • Log in to your account to:
  • Check claim status
  • Review benefit payments
  • Respond to requests for additional information

2. Contact the EDD

  • Call the Employment Development Department (EDD) at 1-800-480-3287
  • They can help with SDI-specific questions if you're awaiting short-term state disability payments

When to Follow Up on Your Claim

If it’s been more than a few weeks since submitting your application and you haven’t received a notice, it's time to follow up:

  • For SSDI/SSI: Check your online SSA account or call their helpline
  • For SDI: Log in to the EDD portal or contact their customer service line

Staying informed and organized can prevent delays and ensure you provide any missing information promptly.
