Updated 07/21/2025

If you receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits in California and need to update your bank account information for direct deposit, it’s important to do so promptly to avoid delays or disruptions in your payments.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

1. Why Updating Bank Information Matters

Keeping your direct deposit details current ensures:

  • Your monthly SSDI payments are deposited correctly and on time
  • There are no delays or returned payments if you close or change bank accounts
  • Your financial records remain accurate for budgeting, rent, and bills

2. Ways to Update Your Bank Information

a. Online via Your my Social Security Account

The fastest and most convenient way is online:

  • Go to ssa.gov/myaccount and log in to your my Social Security account
  • Select “Direct Deposit” under the benefits section
  • Enter your new bank’s routing number, account number, and account type (checking or savings)
  • Review and confirm the changes to ensure your update is processed

Your change usually becomes effective by the next payment cycle, but it may take one month to process fully.

b. By Phone

You can also update your bank information by calling the SSA:

  • Dial 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778)
  • Provide your Social Security number, old banking information, and new banking details
  • SSA representatives are available Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

c. In Person at Your Local SSA Office

If you prefer to handle the update in person:

  • Visit your nearest Social Security office in California
  • Bring a valid photo ID and a voided check or official document from your new bank showing the routing and account numbers
  • Complete any required direct deposit change forms provided by SSA staff

3. When to Update Your Bank Information

Update your direct deposit details before closing your old account to avoid missing a payment. If a payment is sent to a closed account, it will be returned to SSA, causing delays while it is reissued to your new account.

4. Double-Check Confirmation

After submitting your update:

  • Log back into your my Social Security account after a few days to verify your new banking information is listed correctly
  • Monitor your bank account to ensure your SSDI deposit arrives as scheduled
